President Brian Turner reflects on what the Bocuse d’Or means to him

Chef Brian Turner, CBE passes on the mantle of presidency after 29 years.


What does the Bocuse d’Or mean to you?

In my opinion the Bocuse d’Or is the greatest, global cooking competition and to have been involved in it for such a long time has meant an amazing amount to me.

How did you first hear about it and become involved?

In 1987 when Paul Bocuse invited Michel Bourdin to help him with this competition, Michel turned to Richard Shepherd and myself. Richard judged the first competition and I have represented the UK in every competition since that.

What are your favourite memories of the event?

It has been a privilege to attend all of the Bocuse d’Or competitions, my favourite moments would always revolve around the appearance of the great Paul Bocuse on stage. His presence and words will stay with me forever.

What have been the highlights of Team UK’s performances over the years?

The Bocuse d’Or brings together many of the worlds top chefs who share a passion for cooking, gastronomy and a camaraderie rarely found. It has been a real pleasure to be involved with so many British chefs who have played their part in developing the respect for gastronomy in the UK.

How has Paul Bocuse and his legacy inspired you personally and professionally?

Like many people of my generation, Paul Bocuse has been a massive inspiration. His attention to detail in cooking classical dishes in a modern way and his desire to enable people to enjoy themselves eating and drinking at the table sum up the man perfectly.
